Gatsby Benchmarks

There are 8 Gatsby Benchmarks which define world-class careers guidance for young people in England, based on international evidence. They are now used in over 4,700 secondary schools, colleges and independent training providers.
The Gatsby Benchmarks have been central to government statutory guidance for secondary schools and guidance for colleges since 2018. Since then, national performance against the eight benchmarks has more than tripled.
In 2024, following two years of extensive research and consultation, the Gatsby Benchmarks were updated to ensure they continue to define world-class career guidance for young people.

UK Work Placement’s Alternative Provision supports Benchmarks 5 & 6.
Gatsby Benchmark 5 states:
Every pupil should have multiple opportunities to learn from employers about work, employment and the skills that are valued in the workplace. This can be through a range of enrichment opportunities including visiting speakers, mentoring and enterprise schemes, and could include pupils’ own part-time employment where it exists.

To help meet this criteria, UKWP provide the following activities:
– Arrange for a local employer/employee to talk to students about their industry, career paths to entering the industry, the importance of developing personal skills, qualities and transferable skills, and highlighting what academic standards are required in the sector.
– Industry representatives mentor small groups of students.
– Provide support with careers events such as mock interviews, networking etc.
– CV support
– Sourcing guest speakers from specific industries.

Gatsby Benchmark 6 states:

Every learner should have first-hand experiences of workplaces to help their exploration of career opportunities and expand their networks.
To help meet this criteria, UKWP provide the following activities:
– Arrange visits to local companies
– Secure suitable work placements for students wishing to pursue an extended vocational placement.
– Ensure the work placement is meaningful and of value to the young person.
– Manage the placement process from inception to completion, ensuring a smooth process for all involved parties and diminishing the likelihood of any problems.
